Granular materials such as sand, salt grains, coffee beans and pastes are everywhere. Predicting how granular materials flow and deform is obviously important for a wide range of industries, yet still a challenging task despite years of academic work. Computational methods to assist in handling granular materials have greatly improved in the past decades. However, these computational methods need more and more experimental calibration.

CALIPER is a Horizon 2020 funded Initial Training Network (#812638) in which 15 academic and private sector partners come together to advance the field of granular materials forward in numerical modeling, experimentation and understanding. The main aim is to employ the various 3D imaging modalities that have become more available in recent years to help calibrate and improve numerical methods and ultimately enhance our fundamental understanding of the mechanics and flow behavior of disordered materials.
